“Use Your Tools Wisely”
The 30-foot mural was created by artist Bryan Kilgore and the students and visual art teacher, Margaret Lieu of Estrella High School. The idea for the mural started when the City of Avondale approached the West Valley Arts Council about working together on a mural to help abate graffiti in the area. Through a grant from the AZ Commission on the Arts and additional funding from Art League West and a paint donation from Dunn Edwards, the mural project began.
The mural depicts brightly colored, musical instruments that have been passed down through the ages, blending them with a modern, cubist-meets-hip-hop style. The imagery poses the question, “How will we use these tools, and what can we do with the gifts we have?” The mural focuses on the idea of using art to uplift and build a community as opposed to defacing it with illegal graffiti, and that music, the central theme of the mural, can bring the community together.
